How licensing works in Washington

From "I want to drive" to a license in your hand.

Washington requires drivers under 18 to finish a state-approved drivers education program before they can be licensed. Adults can apply without it, but most still book a few lessons so they pass the skills test the first time around.

Before you test

You'll need a WDL ID number from the DOL first. No testing happens without one, so we walk you through the pre-apply step during your very first class.

  1. Drivers Education

30 hours in the classroom, 6 hours behind the wheel, and 1 hour of observation. Take it self-paced online or in person.

  2. Knowledge Test

The 40-question DOL knowledge test, taken right at our Express office or any other DOL-approved examiner.

  3. Skills Test

The DOL skills test covers basic vehicle control, in-traffic decisions, parallel parking, and backing up.

  4. License issued

Bring your test scores, a parent's signature if you're under 18, and the DOL fees to a licensing office. That's it, you're driving.

When I registered for nine 1-hour private lessons I didn't even know how to start a car. I just passed the driving skills test on my first try.
